Nigel Jalkirripa, from the Burarra Clan in North-Central Arnhemland, builds instruments just the way they've been build in the region since time immemorial: long, on the skinny side and with very little finishing. Nigel uses the local earth and ochre pigments for the artwork. This instrument has a voice just like one from old recordings. Not boomy and sluggish but well-balanced, compact and warm. Excellent backpressure, which makes it ideal for a beginner who would like to play a low-keyed instrument, while more experienced players will appreciate its lack of limits on tempo and flexibility. The toot is harmonic, gentle and clear, making it ideal for the local playing style, where the toot is much less frequent and percussive than in Northeast Arnhemland style, but longer drawn out. An instrument with high cultural integrity and a joy to play.
