Left Hand George Djunggunwanga (also written as Djanggawanga, Jungawunga or Jungawanga) is a living legend amongst mago makers and his instruments are most highly esteemed by connoisseurs. He lives as one of the last of the Dalabon in the Bulman Community in South-Central Arnhemland. His eyesight has considerably deteriorated of late, and we are unable to discover if he still builds instruments today. George is one of the few in the area that still follow the old methods and traditions. In the 60's, George went with David Blanasi to accompany the English/Australian entertainer Rolf Harris on a walkabout in Arnhemland. Shortly afterwards, Rolf brought the sound of traditional music to British television.
This instrument is about 15 yrs old, which means it was made at the peak of George's craftsmanship and experience. A wonderfully full, warm, deep voice, wide and rich in overtones, typical for instruments with these dimensions. Despite the size, the back pressure is nicely balanced. Calls come through clear and loud. This mago is decorated in Geroge's typical style and with his special ochre pigments - an impressive testament to the skill of this extraordinary artist. The instrument is in perfect condition.   MP3
