When Yolngu assess the qualities of a yidaki, terms such as "rich in overtones" or "bassy" are not part of the vocabulary. What's important is how the instrument reacts to pulses and strong tongued accents. For them, a good instrument is one where the air in the bore has an "elastic" response, providing a well-balanced, springy counterpoint to the tongued accents: this is of paramount importance to the virtuousity of Yolngu rhythms. This yidaki provides an archetypical example of these ideal physical characteristics. Perfect elasticity, outstanding response to accents, and the interval from the drone to the toot is the classic minor ninth. The toot is a bit husky - but that's more of a character trait than a blemish. The drone is very harmonic and rounded, and the instrument readily responds to the slightest breath. An extraordinary instrument at a fair price, from Yikaki Maymuru, an outstanding newcomer amongst yidaki craftsmen. A Serious Sticks insider tip and one of our current favourites!   MP3
