(LOCATION: IRELAND) As a quick search on Google or Youtube will quickly confirm, Dhapa is another Ganambarr who has become a name to reckon with among yidaki makers in recent years. This is what is quite often referred to as an "old-school" type yidaki - that is to say, a shape unaffected by recent trends and market pressure to produce conical big bell yidaki. You could in fact even say that it has what is usually regarded as a mago-like shape. The bore of the instrument in fact belies the impression given by the outside: although the bell is not massive, the bore has a nice taper, as the thickness of the walls slowly increases towards the mouthpiece, which explains its relatively high weight in relation to size. So how does it sound? Well, the aforementioned mago-like impression that this stick makes isn't entirely misleading: those among you who love magos for their distinctively rich, complex response to subtle variations in breathing and vocals definitely won't be disappointed in that regard. However, cranking up the speed and pressure a little reveals that it is definitely also an excellent instrument to play faster Yolngu-style rhythms, and the toot is smooth and easy to hit too. A wonderfully broad, dry, rich, gritty sound however you play it. The artwork is relatively simple but the rrark "cross-hatching" is particularly precisely executed.
