(LOCATION: IRELAND) A classic yidaki in every respect, sourced and crafted by Burrngupurrngu Wunungmurra, an old master specialising in this kind of instrument. Definitely not a showpiece designed to sit in a corner looking pretty gathering dust, this is a hands-on no-frills cracker of a stick which aches to be played. Weighing in at just 2 kilos, it's lovely to handle, but thanks to very even walls it's very solid and can be pushed hard. The voice is crisp and gritty, but richly resonant without a hint of boominess. Very responsive and easy to play, despite the rather oversized natural mouthpiece, which could easily be tidied up a little with a touch of sugarbag if required. The toot is also surprisingly easy to hit, considering both the largish interval from the drone and again, the size of the mouthpiece. An old-style player's yidaki par excellence. |
