Not really an impressive instrument from the visual angle, but first
impressions can be very misleading. This is a wonderful, fully-fledged
yidaki which lends itself unconditionally to all traditional playing
techniques. Ngongu's yidakis are as a rule in any case smaller and
handier than, for example, Galpu clan instruments, but Ngongu manages to
put a similarly powerful punch into a smaller package. This particular
example of his art is beautifully balanced in the relationship between
backpressure and resonance. The toot and drone are very harmonic in
terms of pressure, interval and character. The drone lies exactly
between D# and E, so it's easy to let rip with a bit of tempo. A
quintessential yidaki ideal for anyone to whom playability and sound are
paramount and appearances unimportant. Movie |
