Burrngupurrngu, the craftsman, says this is a typical Dhadalal style instrument. Dhadalal instruments belong to the the Yirritja moiety, and play a special role in public ceremonies. You can read more about this special and fascinating type of yidaki here. Burrngupurrngu is one of the greatest instrument makers alive, so we won't take the trouble to sing his praises again. Despite the high key, this yidaki has a comfortable, moderate backpressure, with plenty of bass, making it sound much deeper than it actually is. The toot is gentle and not too tight, which is not often the case with high-pitched instruments. The combination tones which are created by light vocals at the right pitch are particularly impressive - that's where this yidaki begins to sing by itself. The wonderful, precise artwork with a sacred Dhalwangu clan fish-trap pattern painted in ochre puts the icing on the cake.   Movie
